Crescent Heights |

Crescent Heights lies just north of beautiful Crescent Lake Park, which includes in its amenities a large lake, a playground, tennis courts and several landscaped acres for family fun. Crescent Heights is conveniently located to downtown St. Petersburg with its museums, parks, entertainment, businesses and I-275. Many original brick paved streets remain and towering Live Oak trees shade the streets. The people who make Crescent Heights their home are a lively mixture of retirees, young families, professionals and anyone who enjoys brick streets, mature trees, and the lively architectural styles built in the 1920s and 1930s. Crescent Lake was called Thompson's Lake in the early days of the city because it was on Mr. Thompson's farm. The area that now comprises Crescent Heights is, in fact, on higher ground that slopes gradually toward the lake to the south. The lake is natural, although man has altered it somewhat. The first homes were built in the 1920s on the site of an old orange grove. Most of the early homes built were used as winter homes.
One home, on 7th Street, was built for Mrs. Mueller of Mueller's Macaroni. In addition, an apartment building on 24th Avenue served as the spring training home for Babe Ruth when the New York Yankees trained at Huggins-Stengel Field at the south end of Crescent Lake. Historic Home Styles include American Bungalows, Frame Vernacular, Colonial Revival, Mediterranean Revival, American Foursquare, Prairie, Ranch, Minimal Traditional and both Masonry and Frame Vernacular. Most of the homes include such amenities as pine or oak flooring, large eaves, front porches and uniquely built-in features such as custom cabinets flanking brick fireplaces. Many homes are two bedroom Bungalows; however, large two story three and four bedroom homes are also common. In recent years, Crescent Heights has attracted many buyers who wish to refurbish homes that are available at a less than premium price. Refurbished home sales in Crescent Heights have attracted the attention of the local realtors and square footage prices of homes in the neighborhood are on the rise.
The neighborhood association began in 1989. The name Crescent Heights was chosen when one resident commented that the home she lived in had a concrete sign in the yard saying "Crescent Heights." The organization itself was formed primarily as a social organization to get residents together to talk and share information with neighbors. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the American Baptist Church on the corner of 28th Avenue and 8th Street. There are no meetings in August and December.
Other recurring programs include setting out luminaries up and down the streets and avenues on New Year's Eve, neighborhood garage sales, and a block party in October. Crescent Heights has received a neighborhood grant that furnished a series of signs to put around the neighborhood on meeting day to remind neighbors of the meeting. Crescent Heights boundaries are 22nd to 30th Avenues North and 4th to Martin Luther King Streets North.
